Losing a Life

In these middle years of my life I am still coaching sports teams, and in that context the 40s it pushes me physically, but these young people show me how gap between my youth and my current age is widening each year.

Time marches on. The things that we used to trust in have forsaken us. In some ways I imagine a painter who has aged and can no longer paint the details into the canvas like he did when he was younger. Maybe he can’t hold his hand steady anymore. Nothing stays the same. Nothing is forever—almost.

Our time in this world will be ultimately connected to one side or the other. It will be connected to God and love or self and death . The greatest example of this comes from the greatest and most royal and eminent of all kings. He had a son whom he loved totally and completely. The story of the ages, that starts like a fairy-tale, played itself out in epic fashion. The very calendar of the western world is shaped around it. It is the greatest and most disregarded event in history.

The greatest expression of Love in the history of the world is so great, that it is worth my whole life. This means that when my athletic ability wanes, there is a moment of reflection and then I realize that it does not matter. Whatever it is for you that you hold on to. If it is not connected to this story. Love. It will forsake you in the end. We see this played out over and over in everything. Collectors collect and die, leaving their loved ones to disperse the collection. Prize fighters brag and win for a time, but the higher they climb, the harder they fall in the end. The old and decrepit rich die and end up enjoying what for eternity? Job said, “I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave…”

This is why it is imperative that we stop. Stop. Stop!!

Give up your life.

Connect to the Eternal. To love. To the ethos of the story of Love. It is worth you whole life. If you learn this, you will never be the same. You must ask for wisdom to understand these ancient truths:

“To find your life, you must lose your life—and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 1039

“If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.” Matthew 1625

“If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.” Luke 924

“If you try to hold on to your life, it will slip through your fingers; if you let go of your life, you’ll keep it.” Luke 1733

Just like you, there have been time when I have been brought low into deep sorrow, but I thank God for those times. He stops our lives from time to time and we have an opportunity to change course and live a new one. No matter where we are at or what our circumstances are; we can die to our old life and begin living a completely different life. It is like being reborn into a completely different life, and we choose this new life daily.

It is an exchange. We have to choose daily to exchanged my wants and desires for Gods purpose. It isn't easy but it is worth it in the end. We must endeavour to remain faithful to His purposes until the end and He will give me a crown of life.

May the Lord bless you.
